Terrazzo is used for a number of applications within a home or a commercial property. Used as far back as in the times of ancient Rome, the technique was rediscovered by the Venetians who reused marble chips by setting them in concrete and polishing the surface. The result was a beautiful and durable floor. Modern terrazzo is no less beautiful, and incorporates Portland cement, granite, acrylic binders and as much as 72 percent in recycled material such as glass, which when polished results in a stunning, durable, and functional surface for a home or commercial installation.
This is not to say that these types of floors are completely maintenance free. They still need to be cleaned, and occasionally repaired or refinished and polished. Polishing terrazzo floors will keep them looking their best, and makes the most of the room’s décor and furnishings.
Polishing Terrazzo Floors Step-by-Step
- Do not use an acidic cleaner like vinegar, hard scrubbing materials or abrasives!
- Dust the floor with a dust mop, wiping in the corners with a soft microfiber or chamois towel.
- Mop with clean warm water and a soft sponge mop, wringing the mop after each swipe, and mopping until the water is clear.
- Use only the polish recommended by the manufacturer, apply following the manufacturer’s direction and then buffing with soft toweling or by using a buffing machine.
Applying a sealant is optional, and should be done by professionals in order to assure the best results. You’ll need to clean your floor with a PH-neutral terrazzo cleaner or warm water as a part of standard maintenance, and you may even want to invest in a buffing machine. For anything else you and your floor will be happier and better off with the work of terrazzo professionals.
