Before renting an apartment, there are a few things that you should do to ensure that you fully understand what you are getting yourself into and to protect yourself. This will make the experience of renting your first apartment more satisfying.

As you are looking at apartments close to FSU, take time to evaluate the property and the neighborhood of each apartment you look at. You want to be sure that the neighborhood is safe and comfortable. Don’t be hasty when making your decision. Take the time to visit the neighborhood at different times of the day and week. If possible, take time to talk with individuals who live in the community and get their opinion.

Consider getting renters insurance. You will likely need to go through a local insurance agent to do this. This will protect your belongings in case of a fire, theft, or natural disaster. Premiums are usually pretty cheap. Also, find out about displacement coverage, which usually is a feature that goes with renters insurance.

Closely examine leases for each of the apartments close to FSU that you are considering. While it may seem time-consuming, reading the entire document is important. After you sign the dotted line, it is a done deal. If you do not understand part of the terms or if you do not agree with them, ask questions. You should only sign the document when you are completely comfortable with the terms of the agreement.
